Active Release Technique

What Is ART?

Active Release Techniques® (ART) is a highly specialized, hands-on manual therapy system designed to diagnose and treat soft tissue disorders. It targets problems in muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves that arise from overuse, repetitive motion, trauma, or postural strain. These stressors can lead to the development of dense scar tissue or adhesions, which restrict movement, reduce strength, and cause pain or inflammation.

How Does Art Work?

ART works by combining precise practitioner contact with patient-guided movement to break up these adhesions and restore optimal tissue function. Each ART session is tailored to the individual’s specific condition and involves a thorough evaluation of the texture, tension, and mobility of affected tissues. The provider then uses their hands to apply tension to the dysfunctional area while guiding the patient through specific movements that elongate and release the restricted tissues.

Unlike general massage or stretching, ART uses over 500 unique protocols for different anatomical structures, making it an effective solution for treating conditions such as:

\

Sciatica

\

Carpal tunnel syndrome

\

Neuropathy

\

Tennis and golfer’s elbow

\

Plantar fasciitis

\

Rotator cuff injuries

\

Shoulder or hip impingement

\

Frozen shoulder

\

Tendonitis

\

IT band syndrome

\

Trigger finger

\

Post-operative scar issue/adhesion

\

Shin splints

\

Chronic neck and back tightness

ART is widely used by elite athletes, weekend warriors, and people with physically demanding jobs because it provides measurable improvements in flexibility, strength, range of motion, and pliability of tissue. It is also valued for its ability to quickly resolve conditions that have not responded to other forms of therapy. Whether used for rehabilitation, performance optimization, or general musculoskeletal care, ART offers a non-invasive, results-driven approach to restoring movement and relieving pain at its source.
